RT yesterday reported, hunters discovered the sword in Skaftárhreppur, Iceland, an area that experienced heavy flooding last year. The sword was mostly intact except for the tip of the sword that was broken off from the body. The body of the sword is slightly bent and sometimes rusted due to many years of exposure to the outdoors. However, pieces of wood were still clearly visible from the hilt.

"We have dated the sword to circa 950 or earlier. We are very excited because this discovery is the 23rd Viking sword discovered in Iceland," said Kristín Huld Sigurðardóttir, director of RT. Icelandic Cultural Heritage Authority.
"It is possible that some traces of the scabbard are still left on the blade but we will know more after a thorough examination by conservation experts," Sigurðardóttir said.
